Annual Bead exchange

Posted by BorntoBeadnz on July 29, 2010

Hi all,

Well I was one of those 10 beads in one day artists, what fun! and excuse to lampwork all morning rock on. I chose to try the new technique we learnt at sarah Hornik’s workshop. Wig Wags. Some were succesful and some not. Karen might need to send me the horrid pink and red one, I apologise in advance. I am now selling CiM and I was trying the new CiM Gelly Sty and melted it to within an inch of its life and voila it stays pink so that is why the wig wag died a horrible death :) I have included a small snippet of wig wag with each of my beads so you can see what they started out like. Still learning application.

‘glass agates’

Posted by KristanHorne on July 14, 2010

I put together a simple mini-tutorial for the Affordable Inspiration newsletter on these ‘agate’ like beads I’ve been playing with lately and thought I would share it here too.

I can’t seem to add it with pics but it is downloadable here…

Annual Bead Exchange

Posted by Bobbie Pene on July 13, 2010

I thought it would be good for us to post about our beads for the bead exchange – the inspiration behind our beads. I like to choose a technique that I am unfamiliar with and use the opportunity to master it by the last bead made.

I wanted to create bright and sparkly beads that were etched in places and left unetched in others – sort of like windows to see the sparkling inclusions beneath. It sounded great in theory but the etch didn’t seem to take on many of them. I had never used etching solution before so etched trial beads made with Effetre. They etched beautifully, but my beads for the bead exchange were made with Bullseye glass and look more scratched than etched.

I don’t have enough time to make 10 more beads so will be sending these in for the exchange. I apologise in advance to those of you who receive a ‘dud’ bead.

Survive and Thrive: Fuelling the Business of Creativity

Posted by BorntoBeadnz on June 29, 2010

Thursday 8 July, 2010 |10.30am to 6pm | Auckland University School of Business

There’s just 10 days left until this exciting and innovative event takes place – so to get your creative juices flowing, here’s a bit more information about what’s happening on the day.

We are thrilled to announce that Irene Pink, 2009 finalist in the New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards ‘Best Female Comedian’, will be our warm, funny and ever- so-slightly bossy MC for the day!

  • Your choice of 10 snappy, practical and targeted short workshops from subject-matter gurus, such as Russell Toplis presenting his ‘Top Five Money Tips & Tools’, Vicki Allpress-Hill on ‘Marketing on a Shoestring’, Lorraine Blackley on how ’Your Creativity can Transform your Business’, Baruch Ter Wal on ‘Branding: More Than Just a Logo’, and many more –the programme is available at  http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/connect/events/2010/jul/71498-in-the-workshops-survive-thrive
  • Speed Networking! It’s like speed dating, only much more rewarding! It’s a fantastic, one-off opportunity to meet and connect with people who you want and need to talk to, who want and need to you. Truly, not to be missed!
  • New Zealander of the Year and Supreme Award Winner of the 2010 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards, Ray Avery will move, challenge and inspire us with his story of the ups and downs he’s experienced as a world-renowned inventor and social entrepreneur.
  • An Expo of people and organisations who can help you do what you do – already confirmed The Sustainable Events Alliance, Splore Dynamics, NZ Art Guild, Goethe Institute, ART Generator…

Don’t forget Earlybird registrations (up to 1 July) are $25, after that it’s $30 so it really does pay to get in early. If you are having difficulty choosing which workshop sessions to do and when – don’t worry – you are welcome to decide on the day. For more info about the programme, to register your attendance and other details like accessibility, food and parking, see http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/survive-thrive

Survive and Thrive is a rare opportunity for artists, producers, businesses, organisations, makers and doers from the creative sector. Don’t be the person who hears all about it after the event – you really ought to be there!

Survive and Thrive 2010  is an initiative of the Arts Regional Trust, in partnership with The Big Idea, significantly supported by ASB Community Trust and Auckland City Council. Survive and Thrive 2010 is supported and co-hosted by The University of Auckland’s Business School and National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries.

The Survive & Thrive 2010 Expo is an important opportunity for creative people to engage with enabling organisations such as yours that are the motivators and backbone of Auckland’s creative sector infrastructure. Survive & Thrive 2010 is a significant networking event in the creative sector for entrepreneurial artists, producers & organisations working in the Auckland region.
