Bead Competition
2010 NATIONAL GLASS BEAD COMPETITION
Theme:
As voted by our Members the annual bead competition theme is Elements.
Although elements can be Water, Air, Fire and Earth, the theme is not limited to this. You can interpret Elements in any way you feel fit, the only rule regarding Elements is that your statement of techniques and the theme are very clearly described and stated to support your concepts. This is to avoid any ambiguity of your bead design which may affect the judging. Beads will be judged on technical merit and representation of the theme.

Kiwi Bead Collection
The first year that the competition ran NZGBA ran the competition on an acquisition basis, meaning that winning beads were added to the NZGBA Kiwi Bead Collection. Some members were not happy with this so the next year we ran it without the acquisition. However, we recognise that as a community of Beadmakers we are in a unique position to protect and preserve our art for future generations. We would like to propose creating a collective of glass beads that we may in 10 years time be able to exhibit at NZ museums and possibly have a travelling exhibition. This is only possible if members choose to participate and donate their winning and entry beads to the collection. The collection will be held by NZGBA committee and will in a number of years be shown publically. If you would like to participate please indicate this on your entry form.

2009 Annie Rose Bead Week Report
What a wonderful week we had here in Whangarei. The Events and Classes that took place were well attended with enthusiastic Glass Bead Makers from all over New Zealand and Australia.
‘Beads of Courage’ was on Tuesday, May 12, with 8 torches going in the Annie Rose Torch Studio. We used the list of Beads from the Child Cancer Foundation and created beads from almost every category. Glass rods and torch usage was donated by Annie Rose Ltd and over 50 beads were made and sent to Isla Osborne, our Beads of Courage contact person. Thank you to all who donated their time and made beads and especially to those who came back donated their time and CLEANED the beads. They are all beautiful. This is the third year that Annie Rose has sponsored this event and will continue to do so. It always feels good to be doing something for someone and making beads is a creative volunteering opportunity.
Besides the events and classes there were a few sightings of mature grown women and men, in colourful poodle outfits. Apparently these poodles left the premises (escaped) and were seen in the Town Basin. You never know what’s going to happen in Whangarei, these days. We’re still wondering ‘who let the dogs out?’
Workshops for the next five days were filled with intermediate and advanced glass bead artists from New Zealand and Australia. Emily Lake taught an advanced class on Dichroic techniques with Effetre Glass. Beautiful creations always come out of her classes and, as always, it was a joy to have her around.
Kathryn Wardill, Melbourne, taught two days of Intermediate level techniques. Besides her lovely teaching methods, she talked about life as a glass artist, how to move up to the next level, how to get your name out there and opportunities for submissions to international shows.
The last two days the students were pushed to make large hollow beads, bird beads, rings, even a large branch with leaves and birds sitting in a row, and other creative endeavours.
Saturday Night was the NZGBA Awards Dinner and Masquerade Party. Of course there were those that went a bit over the top, I won’t mention any names to protect the innocent. Deb Miller, of Adelaide, won the Mask Contest and the $100 cash for her creative, and a bit spooky, handmade mask.
All of the beads were on display at the dinner and the Viewer’s Choice voting took place. Lisa Jane Harvey’s incredible world bead won, hands down. Good on Ya, Lisa Jane, you’ve raised the bar once again.
Personally, I summed up the week as feeling ‘deliciously exhausted’. My brain is on overload and I’m hoping that that feeling never leaves.
I can’t wait to try out the new things I’ve learned and create finished pieces of jewellery, rather than my single bead creations.
