Last month a few lampworkers got together to release our beads into the wilds of urban Auckland. We thought that it was time to share the joy of beadmaking; planting wonderful suprises for people to find in unexpected places.

Here are a few comments from New Zealand recipients this year:

I had the same concern, my current ones I advise to put in indor plants, patios etc but I had the same question so I have some in my mums garden in Masterton which experiences extreams of hot and cold and I will see how they go. I thought they would crack because the mandrel and glass woud expand and compress at different rates but my fish/flowers are glued onto old mandrals after they are made so should not expand/compres at differnt rats as much. I do have another 3 that were fixed to a mandrel in mums garden (couldnt get them off) and none of these have cracked so far (been through summer and frosts so far).

Beautiful. I want some of these in my garden (to go with all the beaded garden stakes I have (beads I liked but couldn't get off the mandrel) - do you think they would shatter in the extreme hot/cold of Otago?

Thanks. Off the mandral - but I made these on a mandral - thought off the manreal was not using one, no hole in the bead? Spiral would be great - tried a little one but managed to get glass stuck and then it snapped off - will need to practice more :)

Amazing Shirlee those are stunning perfect for the off mandrel section of the competition. why not try something a little different like spirals instead of petals?
