Bead Archaeology Stitch Classes
Posted by KarileaLindsayBeale on January 28, 2011
I would like to take the opportunity to invite you all to two fabulous stitchwork classes that are happening in conjunction with the NZGBA Bead Archaeology exhibition. If you are interested in learning how to stitch with correct tension, using the correct materials and beads, for a fabulous outcome – then come along!
The first class is an Ndebele Cuff made with a stitch that originated with the Ndebele tribe of South Africa. The sample is pictured using bronze beads (it is actually my personal cuff). The kit itself is lovely neutral tones of grey and black (stunning!). This class is generously sponsored by Beads Glorious Beads in Kingsland, Auckland and will be held at the Art Station on the 5th Feb from 10.00-13.00.

The second class is a contemporary take on an Egyptian Sun Collar. It combines crystal drops, seed beads and a beautiful button clasp in its design. There are two colourways available – as pictured. This class is generously sponsored by Auckland Beads of Devonport, Auckland and will be held at the Art Station on the 12th Feb from 10.00-14.00.
Kits and tuition are provided with the class. As this is a fundraising opportunity for the NZGBA, class fees will apply. Classes can be booked by following the links on the NZGBA websites ‘Exhibitions’ page.

Evening with glass engraver Lesley Pyke
Posted by BorntoBeadnz on December 5, 2010
Hi all,
The evening with glass engraver Lesley Pyke is Tuesday 7th December, 7.30 at Ponsonby Intermediate School. The entrance is at 50 Clarence St Ponsonby – drive in and plenty of parking. From there, follow signs to Karin Jackson’s classroom. Lesley will be demonstrating (if anyone has some glass with a polished surface that can be engraved – please bring it along), and showing photos and talking about her work.
Thank you to the people who replied and are coming (17), and if anyone else wishes to attend, just turn up on the night – all welcome. Donations will be gratefully accepted to cover a few drinks and for Lesley for her time.
Many thanks and see you there.

Poop or Popo?
Posted by BorntoBeadnz on October 17, 2010
Recently I had a group of engineers come into the studio to learn how to use a torch. While I was going through safety I explained the acronym POOP for turning the torch on and off i.e. Propane on, Oxygen on then Oxygen off and Propane off.
One of the guys who is a welder challenged me. he said that you should turn the Propane off first and then the Oxygen. His reasoining was that the danger exists where you switch off the flame and it sucks bac down the pipe and into the bottle which would cause the bottle to explode. Of course we have the flah back arrestors (which are essential as I met someone who had an acetyline bottle explode just a few months back).
But it got me thinking that that makes perfect sense, if the oxygen is kept running when you turn off the propane then the flame is unable to travel back as it is being forced out by the oxygen. So while I have flash back arrestors at every point on my system the risk seems diminished by turning off the propane first.
Who else has heard about this? can anyone else varify this concept?

Mark Eliott: A dance of Improvisation and structure
Posted by BorntoBeadnz on August 31, 2010
October 26th-28th
In this workshop, Mark Eliott aims to explore the relationship between spontaneity and structure. He will introduce the participants to a range of techniques and approaches he uses in his own sculptural work. Using clear and coloured borosilicate glass, the projects will include blown vessels and forms from solid glass, many of which are drawn from nature. The choice of projects will be influenced by the interests and skill level of the group. Each exercise will be designed to develop specific skills in blowing and sculpting while serving as a framework for improvisation.

secondhand beadroller
Posted by KristanHorne on August 9, 2010
Ok, I have for a sale a gently used ‘Classic Four CG Beadroller’. It’s pretty much as new, a few little chips along one edge but nothing thateffects the shapes, the only reason I’m selling it is I got one of the Sampler rollers which doubles up on the classic four shapes.
Sizes are – oval 28x11mm, round 14mm, disc 15x6mm and barrel 14x14mm. New these are $96 NZ, I’m selling for $80.
